Time's Relative by Debbie De Louise is a time travel adventure revolving around a scientific invention, implemented in a mysterious disk that allows people, holding it in their hands, to travel to any space and time coordinate set on its dials. The disk was the invention of two owners of a company developing software for the tourist industry. One of the two, Jane Oldsfield, goes missing, prompting the other, Greg Parsons, to place an ad in the paper, offering a job for a potential replacement. Samantha Stewart, an unemployed librarian, answers the ad and is hired for the job. From that moment, it’s a whirlwind adventure of mystery, time travel, murder, and a desperate attempt to save the future that could be put in jeopardy by the greed of an unscrupulous woman. Two cats, a photographer friend of Sam’s, a detective, and a dysfunctional family play a role in resolving the mystery with the outcome hanging on a thread.
The novel’s plot is ingenious, ratcheting up the tension from the moment when the stakes become clear. Time's Relative is a real page-turner, tempting the reader to skip ahead to find out what happens next. The conflict is between good and evil, responsibility and consuming greed, loyalty, and betrayal. Sam’s character is endearing, life-like, reminding the reader of present and past acquaintances. Debbie De Louise knows a lot about cats and her feline friends play an important role in the plot and that should be deeply satisfying to cat-lover readers. The novel has a satisfactory outcome and comes full circle from the initial mystery to the conclusion. I recommend it to lovers of time travel stories who like unexpected twists in their reading.
