Bulwer-Lytton’s classic opening line, “It was a dark and stormy night,” has met with considerable disdain over the years, but, in reality, beginning a story with a horrific storm is a good way to set the scene and engage readers. Set the scene in two different eras with a storm, and one has a stunning opening to a time travel mystery, Casi McLean’s novel, Timeless Mysteries. Historic icon Nikola Tesla was born on a stormy night in 1856. In the present day, three sisters, Meadow, Raine, and Summer, seasoned time travelers, are called through the portal into the 1890s to prevent Tesla’s murder, so his marvelous creations have the chance to see the light of day. The sisters are sent on a spiraling journey through multiple portals as rogue time travelers intersect and threaten to set their plans awry.
Casi McLean’s novel, Timeless Mysteries, is the third book in the Three Sisters Islands Mysteries series. Like the other books in this series, the plot is full of action, adventure, mystery, murder, and, yes, a few miracles. The characters are well-developed and there is a clear definition between the protagonists and the antagonists as the plot thickens with intensity and excitement. The author weaves a compelling narrative, complete with strong descriptive narrative passages that invite the reader right into the story. The jumps in time are orchestrated with ease so the reader doesn’t get lost (literally) in time. A great read, full of suspense that will keep the reader guessing to the very end.
