Livy loves to play outdoors. She loves tigers. Her favorite book is about Tawny Tiger. But one day, Livy gets so sick she needs help to climb into her own bed. The next day, her parents take her to the doctor. The doctor explains that Livy is very sick and will need strong medicine to get well. The medicine might have side-effects that make her feel angry or sad. Tiger Livy by Erin Garcia and Betsy Miller shows how thinking like a tiger helped Livy be strong enough to take her terrible tasting medicine, and her shots, and even being in the hospital. She kept reminding herself, “A tiger’s gotta do what a tiger’s gotta do.” She did all the brave things she needed to do to get well. The illustrations by Ivreese Tong show Livy’s strength and compassion.
Tiger Livy is not just for sick children who need to be brave in order to get well. This book will help their families, friends, and classmates understand what is happening and how much work it is to heal. The authors, Erin Garcia and Betsy Miller, admit that sick children think it’s not fair that they can’t go out and play. “I may be sick, but I’m still me!” Livy is more than brave for herself. She helps other children (both in the book and in the read-to audience) be brave like tigers, too. Ivreese Tong’s illustrations show Livy getting stronger and finally, when she is well again, going out to play fiercely like a tiger.
