This Too Shall Pass: Poems, Prose, and Essays by David Yuen is a thoughtful and uplifting collection of poetry and essays that examine contemporary topics such as politics, the invasion of Ukraine, and the Covid-19 pandemic. It includes encouraging faith-based messages and derives insight from relatable experiences. Yuen recalls learning about the Omicron variant and the number of deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus by January 2022. He explores what it means to live in a community and derives lessons about dealing with fear and fatigue from the experience. Yuen is open about his challenges, including his battle with illness, self-worth, sadness, and fear. He examines how faith and trust in God can provide stability during uncertain moments. He encourages his audience to find security in God, who loves us completely.
The themes discussed in the collection, such as overcoming trials, fear, and sorrow, are practical. Yuen writes in a down-to-earth style, candidly sharing his experiences and exploring important, valuable lessons that are timely and applicable in everyday life. His biblical expositions are straightforward, can be understood by any reader, and are enlightening. I gained greater insight from each piece included and was inspired to view difficult situations through faith. As we face greater global economic and political instability, poems and accounts like those included in the work offer hope that God is still in control. This Too Shall Pass by David Yuen explores how life is a constant series of changes and includes empowering essays and poems that address issues that are part of the human experience—highly recommended.
