In There’s No One Like Mom: Tips, Tools and Strategies for Elder Care, Carole Alexander presents a handy guide that outlines what it takes to care for an elderly parent in your home. In very personal anecdotes from her life with her aging mother, Alexander spells out how she moved from an expressed dislike of her mother in her childhood, to tolerating her as an adult, to really loving her as her adult caregiver living in the same home with her. In real life examples, Alexander describes how she came to the decision to change her life completely. In the process, she explains her second thoughts as she discovered how difficult it can be to be the caregiver of an aging adult. Alexander outlines how her own issues sometimes interfered with her ability to care for her mother – and how she overcame those issues.
Undoubtedly my favorite parts of There’s No One Like Mom: Tips, Tools and Strategies for Elder Care are the “Lessons Learned” at the end of each chapter. After exploring the parts of her relationship that prompted her learning, Alexander lists those things that she learned through each step of the process. These lessons are the real tips, tools and strategies that can help anyone who is caring for an elderly parent – and can give you insight into making the right decision if you are thinking about caring for a parent in your home. At the end of the book, Alexander includes almost 30 pages of resources including names of agencies, addresses, telephone numbers and websites. This list would be an invaluable resource for anyone acting as a primary caregiver!
