The Worldly Adventures of Nicholaas in Arizona: Lost Cities is a children’s historical adventure by Betty Davis. Nicholaas and his friend Pieter are swimming when they see a blood moon, followed by an unusual cloud that has the image of Apache chief, Cochise. While heading to baseball practice, they fall into a dark hole at the base of a tree root. A light from a magical arrow takes them in time to 1976 and they meet their favourite baseball players at a stadium. On a trip to the Dragoon Mountains with his parents and Pieter, Nicholaas is convinced Chief Cochise directed him to a path. He is transported to the 1890s and finds himself observing the battle that started when the army commander accused peace-loving Cochise of theft and murder. Nicholaas yearns to be with his parents after witnessing this event and wonders if he will be stuck in the past forever.
Arizona: Lost Cities is from The Worldly Adventures of Nicholaas series. A short story that is not only adventurous but also educational. Betty Davis uses historical sites, events and famous people to create a very interesting tale. Children will not only be reading about an exciting journey that Nicholaas and Pieter went on, but will gain knowledge about past historical events and the popular game of baseball that the boys like. The story highlighted the special friendship that the boys shared and showed how they dealt with their fears. Betty Davis has written a nice story from a series I recommend.
