The Witch of Bastanès by Dan Scannell is an outstanding story about Teresa Balterra and Father Michael, who shared a forbidden love in the midst of a hostile world. Teresa became an orphan when she was only ten and was raised by another family until she got married and gave birth to a boy. But when unforeseen events occur, Teresa becomes a target for people who look for someone to punish, forcing her to move to another place. Once in Bastanès, Teresa begins to provide herbal remedies for the local people, but shortly after that, they accuse her of witchcraft and put her on trial. However, Father Miquel, a scholar, a priest, and a scientist, decides to prove her innocence, but when a murder takes place, everything becomes complicated and even Father Michael becomes a target for the Inquisition. Will they be able to escape with their lives?
This beautiful historical romance novel is about two amazing, intelligent, and righteous people who were forced to prove their innocence to weak minds and abusers of powers. I have only words of praise for it. Dan Scannell is a master at bringing to life a tale from the turbulence of the thirteenth century that's partly true and nicely pieced together with captivating characters and plot twists. The Witch of Bastanès by Dan Scannell is a stunning tale of courage and love and also of ignorance, deceit, and the abuse of power leveled against a harmless woman and a man of science. It's a noteworthy portrayal of people who are so naturally suspicious of anyone who comes from a different place and works using a separate set of beliefs and assumptions.
