The Winged Child by Henry Mitchell is for fans of fantasy, science fiction, dystopia, drama, and literary fiction. Millicent McTeer flies in her dreams and talks to transparent figures inhabiting her father Joshua's old inn on the outskirts of the small Appalachian town of Asheton. Can she fly, or is it just a fantasy of a sensitive, talented child? As Millicent grows up, America changes drastically. The Atlantic American Republic threatens to take away citizens' freedoms. But not everyone complies. The Laurel Creek Containment welcomes those ready to resist. These people communicate unusually with each other and live in fragile harmony with nature. Millicent, who can see beyond physical reality, plays a significant role in the Free Laurel Republic. She keeps having a disturbing dream about a door inviting her to open it. What new revelations await Millicent behind this door?

Written in beautiful descriptive language, Henry Mitchell's The Winged Child is for a contemplative reader. The novel has lyrical descriptions of Appalachian nature that heal and uplift those who understand and cherish it. Mitchell also praises the resilience and courage to face tyranny. The author finely depicts a yearning to better understand each other, which is crucial to our polarized world. Mitchell crafts a cast of deep characters. We ask ourselves whether Millicent, with her enormous, loving heart and deep intuition, belongs to the future or if her soul is as ancient as the magnificent mountains she calls home. Her parents, the wise Joshua and the decisive Amelia, are lovable and very interesting. While the novel is more philosophical, it also offers startling twists and turns. Mitchell masterfully combines the elements of dystopia and sci-fi with mythology and lore, creating a unique masterpiece of magical realism.
