The Whispering of Trees by C.Y. Bourgeois is the story of Aggie Ksisak whose teenage life takes a turn when she dreams of a powerful demon spirit who threatens to destroy her and everyone she loves. Things that happen in her life prove the same, but she recovers ... only to see her world falling apart after she turns sixteen. Her legacy as an Inupiat Eskimo shaman has to be embraced and she has to get back her magic and powers. As the story takes readers through relationships, the maturing of Aggie from girlhood to womanhood, and her coming of age, readers are exposed to shamanism, struggle, pain, and hardships faced by the protagonist.
The story line is dark, original and honest, and the spiritual vibes in the plot make it magical and fascinating. The character of Aggie Ksisak is well portrayed and the author's writing gives a good movement and fluidity to the story, keeping readers glued to the book. The theme is strong and powerful and there are some dramatic moments, but the author handles them with finesse and simplicity. The incorporation of shamanism and shaman magic into the story is interesting. The author's voice is descriptive and she narrates in detail, making the scenes and characters vivid so that they come alive for readers. The story has some good lessons and many situations in the narrative will resonate well with many readers, reminding them of their life experiences.
