Linda Viljoen’s The Wager: His to Love is the first installment in the When a Bet Goes Wrong series and features Daniel Beckett. Daniel is the managing director of the most reputable cybersecurity company in the world. His painful childhood taught him that relationships only result in hurt and misery. When his grandmother retires, Daniel faces his cousin Trevor who is half-owner of the company. He makes a wager with Daniel that will end the business relationship. He wants Daniel to marry Angelica Gonzales within four days without divulging his true identity for at least a week. The marriage has to last six months. Angelica is engaged to Christopher Davies. The night before her wedding, Cindy approaches the couple, claiming to be pregnant after an affair with Chris. Angelica breaks off the engagement. While drunk at a nightclub, she goes home with a man. The next morning she wakes up and discovers that she has married a stranger.
Linda Viljoen crafted an epic romance story that kept me glued to every page. The wager that Trevor gave Daniel would be almost impossible to pull off. However, Daniel has Gustav, the head of his security staff, who executes a flawless plan. I found Daniel’s discomfort when he had to interact with Angelica’s family to be amusing. I wondered whether Angelica was more interested in money and flaunting the power it bestows. She was engaged to a powerful attorney and then to a billionaire. My opinion changed dramatically when several unpredictable twists were thrown in. Every character was well-developed. Daniel and Angelica both had their defensive walls crack as they spent time together. The description of Daniel’s house made it appear to be cold and I loved how Angelica chose to make it feel like a home. The Wager is the perfect romance novel for readers who enjoy characters facing nearly impossible, challenging odds.
