The Unattainable Shakes Loose My Tongue: Poems by James F. Vickery, Volume Three is an interesting collection of poems that vary in style and tempo. It is a large collection that pays homage to a lot of different things in this man's life, from his dog, to the poets and artists who inspired him, to modern beverages and electronic devices. Nearly every topic is covered in this work with a bit of his personality thrown in for good measure. They vary in length, but very few go past five or six stanzas.
There were a number of poems that I liked very much in this collection, including 'Midst Glooms of Spruce,' which is a short poem full of interesting word choices and meaning, and 'The Sand Upon an August Day,' which has a good form. The thing I liked most about these poems was that they felt like they were branching out from a normal style and trying something new. They were lyrical and beautiful, and incredibly enjoyable to read.
There isn't a solid theme or organization in the poetry and I think it could have been broken further into sub categories because we flow from a poem about the author's life to a poem about Milton to a poem about cell phones. The quality of some of the poems shines head and shoulders above the rest, though, and reading this is like finding diamonds in the rough. The Unattainable Shakes Loose My Tongue: Poems by James F. Vickery, Volume Three is well worth a read and anyone who gives it a try is bound to find several favorites in its midst. Very interesting collection. I enjoyed reading it quite a bit and quickly found a few favorites.
