Pamela Funke’s children’s story, The Turkeys are Coming, is an enjoyable read aimed at young children. This would be a good early reader (ages seven to ten) or a bedtime read for parents with younger children. Whilst in some parts it was a little too long, which may impact the overall engagement of the message with younger readers, it portrayed a good story that I feel will be enjoyed by all ages. The characters were engaging and the plot built in a nice adventure, some friction between the turkey hunters and the turkeys, and a nice level of suspense that will keep readers wanting to know what will happen when turkey season opens.
The illustrations were colorful, making for a generally good addition that will easily engage readers in the overall story and plot. Pamela Funke portrays an emotive side to this story, which I hadn’t expected, and the reality of human nature, perhaps preparing youngsters for Thanksgiving and other celebrations where this majestic bird is the main feast. The author includes an overarching message around the word of God, trusting in Him and offering words of prayer when in need. This is certainly something that will send a message to younger readers about the importance of belief and learning to turn to God for support and guidance, and trusting in Him and His plan. The Turkeys are Coming leaves the reader without any firm conclusion which I admire, and I can certainly see this as a book that will spark discussion between parent and child about human nature and the circle of life.
