Medhaa Banaji has an awesome imagination and she has used it to create a wonderful adventure for kids called The Transmalians. I like this book. It is one of the best first novels I have ever read and I believe Medhaa Banaji will only get better and better at her craft, which means a lot of great books from her in the future. What is a Transmalian? Transmalians are perfectly normal human beings, but under special circumstances they can transform into an animal and they possess that animal’s characteristics. They are very rare and live among us. In fact, many Transmalians, especially children, don’t even know they are Transmalians. People with the abilities of Transmalians would be very valuable, which would cause them to be secretive and always hunted. This is the world Medhaa Banaji has created in this book. It is a very interesting world.
The Transmalians starts with a bang. Sam and Alana are brother and sister. With no warning, they are thrust into a secret world that they have no clue even exists. They are put into a school and world that reminded me of the magic school Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. There are a lot of interesting characters and the plot moves at a swift pace. Sometimes the kids barely have time before they are thrust into danger again. The writing is clear and appropriate for a book in this genre. I feel it will get better and better until one day everyone knows the name Medhaa Banaji.
