The Time Keeper by Meagan Mahoney is set in early 20th-century Edinburgh around Malcolm McKenzie, a young apprentice to Jack Alexander, a brilliant and eccentric clockmaker. Jack is found dead under mysterious circumstances in the clock tower of Tron Kirk, which turns Malcolm’s life upside down. But Malcolm is determined to uncover the truth behind his mentor’s death. As a result, he finds himself pulled into a web of secrets, danger, and betrayal that goes beyond his close-knit community. From the foggy streets of Edinburgh to the Alexander home and workshop, The Time Keeper brings young readers into a world where only time seems to hold the key to understanding human connections and loss.
From the opening chapters, the author establishes the story's emotional core by introducing Malcolm’s bond with Jack and his sickly best friend, Peter. Jack’s sudden death leaves Malcolm not only having to deal with his grief but also contending with the heavy burden of adult responsibilities, such as managing Jack’s repair work and supporting Peter. The mystery surrounding Jack’s death only deepens when Malcolm discovers unsettling clues—like Jack’s damaged monocle and cryptic notes—pointing to foul play. The tension and intrigue in these scenes create a strong narrative hook. Readers will be fascinated by Malcolm’s coming-of-age journey as he learns to navigate the challenges of loyalty, courage, and justice. Fans of historical fiction and mystery will find much to love in this book. The way Meagan Mahoney develops the characters and an intricate plot makes this a fascinating tale. The Time Keeper will appeal to readers who enjoy immersive storytelling with a blend of heart and suspense.
