The Testimony of a Villain: A Dark Tale of Betrayal, Love, and Crime by Aaron G. Harrell is a tale of violence, of love, and betrayal, the story of Manuel who suffered the worst form of injustice and hurt as a child, and who used his hatred to create a life of power and wealth for himself. As a child, he witnessed the murder of his family by two ruthless men. He vowed to avenge his family and it wasn’t long before he was able to eliminate one of the killers. As his heart hardens with age and he builds a life of crime, so much more is his desire to complete the revenge he once started. The moment comes when he has the chance to kill the second murderer, but he must think about the cost of it all. Can he let everything he’s worked for be destroyed for one single act of vengeance? It’s for the reader to find out.
The Testimony of a Villain is dark, gritty, and poignantly fascinating; a novel that features graphic violence and that looks at the crude reality of life as it is. The characters are infused with a rare sense of humanity and even if the protagonist is a villain, he is crafted in a way that allows the reader to feel the pain that drives him, to understand him from a psychological perspective. This is a character-driven story and the author does an awesome job in portraying what a setting can do to a character. The writing in The Testimony of a Villain: A Dark Tale of Betrayal, Love, and Crime is riveting and the insightful and highly descriptive passages won’t leave readers indifferent. The book also features beautiful illustrations by Anthony L. Lindo, which complement the already arresting feel of the story. The quirkiness in character development is one of the elements that caught my attention.
