Tennis is a game that everyone wants to win. The Tennis Manifesto: A Simple Thinkbook of Tennis Concepts and Strategy by Warren Harris is an innovative, abstract, and whimsical book that speaks about the author’s coaching philosophy in an off-beat and creative way. The motivational and interesting concepts in the book spell out the author’s philosophy which he has created to influence the decision making and thinking that will enable players to win their matches. The author describes tennis as a boxing match where two players will be jabbing and defending until there is an opening to strike. The strategies, balance, and the game on the whole from the author’s perspective will keep readers focused.
The book is amazingly well presented; avant garde, unconventional, and unique, and the formatting and the illustrations complement the author’s words to make it offbeat. It is not the usual handy guide or book with tips and techniques listed for readers to comprehend; instead the book is more like an artwork which makes the entire coaching philosophy look aesthetic and bohemian. The illustrations are as interesting as the formatting and, together with the formatting and the author’s words, the book is a fun read that is visually appealing. The menacing serves, returns, spins, and angles capture the thrill of the game effectively. I would enjoy having a copy of this book in my personal collection because the manner in which the topic is handled is unorthodox and does not sound preachy. The game of tennis has never looked so zany and attractive!
