The System is the story of a young man named John Ash who, after suffering two automobile accidents, was sucked into the mess known as the American criminal justice system. David Ash presents a sobering account of what it is like to find yourself caught in the red tape and lopsided odds, with no idea how to break free of it. Through a series of unfortunate events, and a dismissal of the charges, John is still wrung through the system, interrogated and identified, while heavily medicated. The accounting of his ordeal will break your heart and make you want to rail against the system in the same breath. John’s tale takes us from a mental hospital to jail and back and forth to court more than a few times. The endless cycle of the system is demoralizing and those unacquainted with it often feel overwhelmed and can see no end in sight.

At times, David Ash’s writing style is quite formal, leaving the reader wondering if it is the author’s style or simply the internal thought processes of John. There are plenty of examples and sometimes what sounds like justifications for his ordeal, but John’s account is so detail-oriented that there can be no doubt about his guilt or innocence. He did it, but there were mitigating factors that could have limited his interactions with the criminal justice system. However, as John soon learned, the justice system only favors the lawyers and the criminals. The System is an eye opening account of what can happen if you don’t know your rights and make no efforts to exercise them.
