The Summoner is an epic-length fantasy work penned by author M. C. Glan, and forms the first book in The Temple Of Empia Saga. Recommended for mature audiences due to some graphic depictions of wartime violence, this sweeping adventure combines battles, history, high fantasy realms, vampiric villains and prophecy into one incredible tale. The land of Empia, home to the Empians, once played its part in an ancient war against humanity. When the unwitting Cassandra Wynstrom acts out a play based on that conflict, little does she know her special heritage will set off a cataclysmic chain of events for those around her.
With over seventy chapters to get engrossed in, author M. C. Glan delivers a fantasy lover’s dream read. I found the worldbuilding to be lavish and detailed, with plenty of groundwork laid to produce a realistic environment with a lot of complex history between different races and their tensions. The stage is set for war right from the first moments of the novel, and Cassandra’s heritage and family tales foreshadow some of the later events with an exciting sense of promise. Though it does take a little while to get into the full swing of the action, the introduction of Lharkin really helps move things along. What results is a passionate and interesting opening to a deep fantasy saga that has all the elements of a real world, with the action turned up to ten. Overall, The Summoner is an immersive read for the bravest fantasy fans among us.
