The Story Teller by Shaffiate Kaz Ishmael is a collection of beautiful poems that capture those moments in life we all experience, yet paradoxically are unique to us as individuals. The themes are universal, but the poems and the experiences themselves are uniquely personal. This is the power of a true poet. The ability to bring us together with words that evoke strong personal memories and emotions from individual pasts. I enjoyed these poems, even when I disagreed with the exact nuance of the sentiment it strove to evoke. The imagery is vivid and intense, and the message of each poem is apparent and laid out for the reader to embrace or reject. But at no point did I doubt the power of the poet or the efficacy of the poems.
The Story Teller introduces each poem with a beautiful picture, which captures the essence of the message given or the story told. I love these pictures and wish I could take some of my favorite poems from the book, with its accompanying picture, and hang them around my house. I love the poems themselves, especially those dealing directly with love and heartache. Shaffiate Kaz Ishmael was born on the island of Trinidad and Tobago, and many of these poems are a tribute to and describe the beauty of his island birthplace. If you are a poetry lover and are looking for something down to earth and directly to the point. I can think of no better collection of poetry to recommend than The Storyteller.
