There was an interesting mix of mythology and superhero tradition in The Starlight Chronicles, and one that was apparent right from the beginning. The book kicks off with an action packed punch of a prologue as we meet our hero: Wingdinger. Sound odd? Well, that's because it's the superhero name of course, and we open the story with Hamilton Dinger a.k.a. Wingdinger battling a trickster demon named "The Jester."
Then, we get sent back in time, to the moment it all began, when Hamilton WAS worrying about much more important things....like the intricacies of life, and about Tetris when his whole world is shaken and turned upside down. When a meteor hits his town and awakens hidden powers in people, no one will ever be the same. I'm a big fan of secondary characters that have depth and meaning, which meant that I was a SUPER fan of Elysian, the tiny dragony-thing who is Wingdinger's sidekick and mentor. His bursts of blue flame really helped to distract and occupy bad guys while Wingdinger got to go in for the kill.
The age level of the story was interesting. You could tell the writing was for a younger audience, but it was intelligent and well written, so that I still enjoyed it though I am a bit outside of the target group. While the technical age aimed at young adult, I would say that the writing and styling of the piece skewed a bit younger, more for the pre-teen and tween audience, though that is not denying that older teens may get a kick out of it as well.
The Starlight Chronicles: Slumbering is a really unique story. You don't get a lot of this kind of mix in fantasy, and it's always really cool to find something new. I definitely recommend the book to anyone looking for a new and interesting fantasy book!
