The Skull Gates is a work of fiction in the fantasy, adventure, action, and magical quest sub-genres, and was penned by author P. G. Badzey. Written as the fifth novel in the Grey Riders series, the adventure continues to grow yet more perilous for our band of tough heroes after the events of Assassin Prince. Little known to them is the fate of the Alenar sisters, who have fallen captive to the sinister Ja’al and their wicked plans for Damora. In order to restore peace, the Skull Gates must be destroyed, and so the Riders embark on another quest to find and obliterate these sources of evil before the Ja’al gain the total domination and destruction they crave.
It has been a while since I was last immersed in the works of author P. G. Badzey, and I was delighted to get stuck into the world of Damora with its shadowy corners and sharp edges once again. One of the things which I especially love about this series is the variety it offers along the epic journey, from gorgeous far-flung vistas to grim rituals set to bring about doom in a highly atmospheric and cinematic fashion. Badzey keeps this novel in perfect balance, shifting action to keep readers following the different threads of the story and giving each of the Riders time to shine with their unique skills, whilst also building to a fantastic magical conclusion. Overall, I would highly recommend The Skull Gates to fans of the existing high-octane, atmospheric series.
