The Six and the Crystals of Ialana by Katlynn Brooke goes back hundreds of years in the past when the island of Mu’A was threatened by a horrible misfortune. Six of its best healers set out to stop the curse but one of them is a traitor. Today, in the village of Meadowfield in Aelfar, seventeen-year-old Jarah, the baker’s son, Blaidd, the son of a lazy man with no regular job, and Adain, the blacksmith’s son, are forcibly recruited by the army. Elsewhere in the continent of Ialana, Djana, Tristan, Kex and Tegan’s lives are also in turmoil. They all share a recurring dream and fate will bring them together, and when that happens history seems to repeat itself - but there is a traitor in their midst.
The Six and the Crystals of Ialana is a coming of age fantasy novel written by Katlynn Brooke. It is a story of honor, courage, friendship and betrayal that goes beyond time. It unravels slowly and smoothly so that any reader can follow the plot easily. This makes the book an undemanding read highly suitable for young readers. Having said that, the narrative is rich in twists and turns that will also challenge the imagination. The characters are varied, well developed and three dimensional and it is quite hard not to empathize with all the main protagonists. The shifting of the story teller’s point of view is smooth and effortless so that it is coherent and enjoyable.
