Author Biography

Not so very long ago, a storyteller was born, one might even say, a fantasy weaver (oooh, I like that – kinda rolls off the tongue, dontcha think?). Hand in hand with her most trusted friend, an imaginary boy named Charlie (awww, I miss Charlie), she wove many a tale of aliens and evil clones who impersonated her elder brothers (for certainly she wasn't actually related to those wretched boys who teased and taunted her mercilessly) while growing up in Ontario, Canada. Even when Charlie faded away, she continued to live in her own fantasy world, telling her stories to her stuffed animals, and finally writing them down when she was old enough to know how...

The Silver Dragon of Nital by Vik Walker is the imaginative tale of what happens when young Nathan ventures into Gimblet’s shop on his way home from school one day. Little does he realize that he was, apparently, always destined to do this! Nathan discovers that he is the “sotsuc sinocard” – a special person, a dragon guardian, on whom is bestowed the ability to hatch dragon eggs in the magical world of Nital (which is accessible through a portal in old Gimblet’s shop). With elf Pinnip’s help, Nathan begins training, takes up his challenge, and enters a hidden world where magic, spells, dragons, and amazing powers abound. But once there can he survive the fire breathing of the bad dragons and work out how to get back to his own world?

The Silver Dragon of Nital is an appealing and competently written fantasy story that will entertain young readers. Vik Walker has created a unique world which is explained very well as the story unfolds, told from third person point of view. The plot moves along at a good pace with plenty of surprises, challenges and suspense. Like all good children’s stories, it comes to a satisfying conclusion - with room for further story/sequel development too.

Young readers will love the idea of secret other lands reached through portals, and this story has the right amount of magic and good versus bad. Nathan is a very likable little boy, and the story enables his character to develop as he faces challenges, fears and danger too. The characters of Gimblet and Bortbach are wonderful, complete with their gorgeous “accents”/speech style. There is some lovely use of descriptive language in the book. An entertaining story of manageable length for older children who love fantasy and magic.
