Abandoned by his parents and left for dead as a casualty of a war between gods and men, Dante has known nothing but pain his entire life. As he puts the pieces of his life back together, he implores the gods for an opportunity to better his lot. Hecate hears his plea and makes him an unusual offer. Dante sees a chance he would be foolhardy to refuse, but unknown to him, the goddess has other reasons for her unusually charitable recommendation, which are far from altruistic. Will Dante succeed, or will he become a casualty of the chess game of the gods in The Silver Coin by Mika Mathews?
A desperate goddess hatches a plan to end a long-running war and co-opts a naive acolyte into her dangerous scheme. Mika Mathews integrates elements of Greek mythology into modern times fluidly despite its apocalyptic outlook. The characters are well thought out, with their unique names adding a certain poetic quality to a riveting tale. The attention to detail surrounding Dante’s evolution is remarkable, especially when facing Epione’s test. Mathews uses numerous instances like this to build up the emotional tension that immerses a reader in the story. The best part of this novel is how impressive storytelling is utilized to break down complex rivalries into subplots that the reader would understand with some imagination. Be it Hera’s scheming or Hades' deep conversations; you can be certain that you will not want to put down The Silver Coin before you finish it.
