“The Shattered Door” by Lisa Bouchard tells the story of twins Darcy and Olivia Morrison who are getting nowhere fast with their new business venture, Morrison Investigations. Finding a lost dog for a Boston mob boss is the pinnacle of their caseload. That is until a female publicist is murdered in her home and the prime suspect is her lover, a famous activist telepath. Telepaths are loathed in this near future society, so the Morrison sisters finally get a shot at a big case because no one else wants it. They hope it will make their business and oh yes, they also have another interest in the case--they too are telepaths, desperately trying to stay in the closet. It is a dangerous struggle for the women to prove their client innocent in spite of the prejudice and a cast of threatening characters.

Lisa Bouchard’s “The Shattered Door” presents us with a not too distant future where human beings still haven’t overcome bigotry. It is the same old thing, just a new day and a new target for the hatred and ignorance. Ms. Bouchard demonstrates this so ably that one could substitute telepaths for any one of a number of groups that face similar discrimination in our day. The sisters are believable and are well drawn just like the other characters. This tale stands on its own as a fine mystery but also forces the reader to think a little about what is going on today in our own world.
