The Separation of Briin by K.I.S. follows Briin, an apprentice at the Guild of Magic, who faces constant social misunderstandings due to his literal communication style and sensory faculty. He relies heavily on his brother Hiirn for guidance, as Hiirn is more socially adept and strategic. Hiirn is working on negotiating the unification of two warring peoples, while Briin juggles his research on magical stones and recurring unsettling dreams. Hiirn, who has always supported Briin, becomes involved in a political conspiracy involving the Gruxhoon and a secret organization, The Witchlings of Hoondær. Meanwhile, Briin’s life deteriorates. During his breakdown, Briin dreams of Hiirn in danger. In his desperate attempt to save his brother, Briin must face betrayal, the dark realities of conspiracy, and a series of catastrophic events.
K.I.S. gives readers a totally unique and atmospheric tale in The Separation of Briin. The writing is tight and polished, and we get a real sense of what it means for Briin to be in the throes of unsettling dreams and growing anxiety. The pacing is deliberate and gives space for the characters’ journeys to unfurl organically. I really like stories where the juxtaposition of strengths and weaknesses is used in tandem, and Briin and Hiirn have no choice but to rely on each other. It is important with neurodivergence that moments of latent hostility simmer rather than explode, and K.I.S. makes the stakes feel grounded and personal. The result is a thoughtful story with powerful undercurrents of danger, leaving readers wanting more. Very highly recommended.
