Jeff Mercer, having lost his gay lover a decade ago, is a sad character with no ambition to rise above his current position as salesman in the men’s department at a London department store. When he is warned one morning that the entire third floor of the store will be destroyed in a matter of a few minutes, he is skeptical. He has never seen the girl, Marie Giraud, who warned him; and she doesn't exactly strike him as a reliable source of that kind of information.
However, a few seconds before a gas explosion rocks the department store and totally destroys the third floor, he runs out of the building. On the street he meets Marie again and follows her to a strange vehicle parked a few blocks away. There he learns his fate. He has been enlisted by an army of timeline guardians who work out of an agency that exists in the twenty-seventh century. Marie requests that Jeff be assigned to her crew and the two become trusted friends. In their free time between assignments, Jeff and Marie, who has also lost a lover in the time that went before, share stories about their lives and the men they loved. In several odd twists of fate, the crew of Marie’s time ship come close to their histories and even closer to events that could destroy the Earth’s precious timeline.
The Secret Star by K.C. Finn follows the general sci-fi theories about time being non-sequential, and goes some distance in explaining why the timeline guardians are necessary. However, it falls a little short in explaining why the timeline guardian agency is not a secret organization and why the guardians' real identities are hidden from the public. Aside from those minor confusions, the story is good and culminates in an exciting climax. K.C. Finn has a promising future as a sci-fi author.
