The Scoundrel Days of Hobo Highbrow by Pål H. Christiansen introduces us to a writer, Hobo Highbrow, who is content with his life, even if he hasn’t had work actually published in a long time. However, he suddenly loses his lover and his job and, like many with a creative spirit, he turns to art. When he meets Paul Waaktaar-Savoy of the pop group A-Ha, he begins to think a bit more of himself; perhaps he is a bit of a brilliant man himself.
This book was quirky, funny and interesting all round. Hobo sure seems to think something of himself and it is interesting how he focuses himself on Paul Waaktaar-Savoy from A-Ha, not unlike how many people today still focus on celebrities to make themselves feel better. Pål H. Christiansen has written an endearing book that will make you laugh and, at times, perhaps question the clarity of thought of the main character, but you will enjoy the read no matter what. The book itself flows fairly well. It is a translation from the original language, but it doesn’t seem to have affected it much. I have read a few translated books that were not done well and you can tell this one was done very well. Overall, if you like a bit of humor and a character that may not be perfect but is oh so human like the rest of us, you will enjoy this book. Sit back and relax and prepare to be entertained.
