The Rummy Club by Anoop Ahuja Judge follows the lives of four best friends - Alka, Divya, Priya and Mini - from the time when they met as carefree teenagers in an Indian boarding school to fourteen years later when they all meet again after emigrating to America and becoming mothers, wives, and businesswomen. Mini is happily married to Inder, Priya's love for her husband is waning as he continues to make nasty comments about her looks and weight, Divya want to move her family out of their tiny, cramped townhouse and own a home of their own, while Alka is pushing her son to fulfill her cruelly thwarted dreams. A lot of changes happen as the four of them play rummy every Friday, from death, divorce, and inter-racial dating, to cancer, suicide, and new business ventures. But, despite it all, it is friendship that sustains them.
I loved the Rummy Club by Anoop Ahuja Judge. I really loved the richness and texture she brought to the story and all four women. Their lives were really engaging, each of their voices were unique and their friendship was very fun and relatable. Since I’ve read many books with characters of a similar background to Divya and the gang, I was familiar with many of the terms but I still appreciated the glossary in the beginning. The way The Rummy Club ends hints that there may be more to come --- or that might just be my desperation for a sequel. Either way, more please!
