I asked to review this book. As an atheist I have some strong opinions about religions and the practice of them. I found Matt's explanations of the character of the priests and the believers they treated to be useful as I help people deal with physical and emotional problems by empowering them to cure themselves by discovering how they visualize their problems. They then create their own solutions.

There is a basis of trust and hope in the relationship I build that is easier for the priests because their patients already believe the priests have the power of God with them. The fact that often merely touching (a powerful force seldom understood) caused an immediate cure is not hard to believe. The mind can do that.

I found the exorcisms in the book easy to accept because they were based on solid science and my own experiences helping people. However, the references to levitation and the other most dramatic beliefs about exorcism were not explained or even discussed, which led me to believe he also found these unbelievable.
