Multi-international award-winning speculative fiction author Raven Oak is best known for Amaskan’s Blood (2016 Ozma Fantasy Award Winner, Epic Awards Finalist, & Reader’s Choice Award Winner), Amaskan’s War (2018 UK Wishing Award YA Finalist), and Class-M Exile. Everyone is familiar with jingling bells. They announce the arrival of Christmas and are associated with happiness worldwide. But what if they weren't? Raven Oak tackles this concept in her novel The Ringers. In the town of Dekwood, citizens live in fear. They are terrified of even speaking about the things that occur around them. At night, everything is shut, and they wait, praying they don't hear the bells ring. The silence in the town is deafening. Who are the Ringers? No one dares to think, talk, or ask about that. No one is brave enough to do so except for Elise. This young girl, the bearer of magic, is drawn to such things. Despite everyone's attempts to keep her from investigating, she is determined to discover the deadly truth. She believes she can stop the Ringers. Will she make it, or will they take over the whole town?
Raven Oak is determined to twist the positive spirit that surrounds Christmas into a nightmare. The Ringers is a thrilling short novel meant to make you shiver (and not from the weather). The fast-paced narrative sends chills down your spine that keep you hooked from the first line and it is intriguing but terrifying. The innocent and oblivious eyes of our young protagonist intensify the apprehension. Nonetheless, Elise is clever enough to keep the story going. Fantasy, paranormal, and horror are all mixed in this 80-page book. This tale is not for the faint-hearted. It's up to you to decide whether you are ready to uncover the secrets behind the town of Dekwood.
