The Red Wolf's Prize by Regan Walker is the story of Renaud de Pierrepont, Red Wolf, and Lady Serena of Talisand. Awarded Talisand and Lady Serena's hand in marriage, Renaud is excited to settle down and have his own lands, and hopefully start a family with his soon to be wife. Serena tries to escape her fate twice by running away, even posing as a servant for a time, before Renaud discovers who she is. Resigned to her fate, Serena determines to marry the new lord and make the best of things so that the people of Talisand are cared for. Despite war, mixed emotions, tempers running high, knights out for revenge, and treason, Serena and Renaud make peace with each other and set out to start a life with happiness, but end up with a little more than both thought they'd find in each other.
The Red Wolf's Prize by Regan Walker is well written with unique plot twists and decent imagery. The characters have realistic flaws and feel like they could step off the pages and hold a conversation with you. What I really liked about The Red Wolf's Prize is that while not fully rooted in history, it draws upon what is known to have happened. To learn that Renaud de Pierrepont and a couple of his knights were real men that fought, and could very well have fought and lived a life similar to what is portrayed in The Red Wolf's Prize, makes the book even more enjoyable. I can't wait to read the second book in the series to see what other magic Regan Walker can work.
