First of all, this review may be a little biased. I am, after all, one of the most devoted bloggers to all things Steampunk! That being said, I ADORED the Red Plague Affair. It took me a long time to warm up to book one in the series, The Iron Wyrm Affair, but once Lilith Saintcrow hooks you, she does it for good.
In The Red Plague Affair, Bannon and Clare are back in the saddle. They obviously have some sexual/romantic chemistry with some amazingly tense moments, but alas, no cigar. I guess I will have to wait it out for book three. As for the plot, wow...what a read! Sometimes it is very confusing to jump right into the inexorably blended Steampunk world of a mechanical, science-fiction based, historical fiction novel unless you are already a fan of one of the genres. However, there was a very intense amount of detailing in this book. You get vast expanses of imagery, intricate descriptions of action scenes and events, and you really gain a wonderful view of the world building. If I had one criticism, it was that the character development didn't move anywhere from book one. Bannon and Clare are truly cool characters, yes, but you still want to see them learn, struggle, and grow throughout a series. They seem to have done most of their growing in book one, developmentally speaking.
I was truly held captivated by the suspense and twists within the novel. One of the things that I LOVED was the feeling that time was running out and that things weren't going to end well. What a thrill!
