The Rebel is the second book in the Lies of Lesser Gods series by L.G.A. McIntyre. The despotic rule of Doaphin has cost the lives of many rebels who want nothing but to liberate the lowlands. Gralyre and Rewn Wilson refuse to watch the ruthlessness in the land and decide to retaliate, but Gralyre knows he is treading on dangerous ground — he can be treated as a spy if he is discovered. Meanwhile, he continues to be assailed by nightmares and the darkness that invades his mind grows stronger every passing day. He has chosen to stay beside the rebels and he knows he can’t leave Lady Catrian alone. He is smitten by her, but does she really feel the same for him? Catrian’s heart is melting for Gralyre, but with the looming war and the execution of Doaphin’s plan to annihilate humanity, can she afford to have divided loyalties, especially when Gralyre is haunted by his dark past?
The Rebel is a great story and I must say that I loved the language. The narrative voice is very strong and L.G.A. McIntyre keeps it natural, allowing the accents of the characters to come across the story brilliantly, an element that reflects the social setting and the world in which the story takes place. It is a wonderful story for fans of fantasy, a story that features magic, the battle between good and evil, and characters that are phenomenal. An evil despot is about to sink humanity and it is wonderful to follow strong characters stand up against the inhuman rule. Gralyre is a well-developed character. A man who is inwardly splintered when it comes to where his loyalties lie. While he wants to stand with the resistance, he also has to deal with his internal demons and the love he feels for Catrian. The Rebel is exciting, deftly written, and balanced.
