In this final book of the Orkney trilogy, The Raven God by Alane Adams, Loki accidentally kill Odin’s son, Baldur. Odin imprisons Loki and his family. Life in Orkney returns to peace and tranquility after the Volgrim witches have been conquered. However, the calm is soon interrupted by the cunning and vengeful Loki, who blames Odin for the death of his wife and children. The leader of the fire giants and the god of mischief, Surt, feels Orkney lacks anyone to lead them since Odin’s death and he aims to take control. Sam’s mother, Frigga, commands her son to retrieve Odin’s soul from the dark underworld on the Island of Pantos. The only hope for the people of Orkney rests on Sam and his friends having a successful mission to find Odin. The mission is not helped by Sam’s errors of judgment, but luckily his friend Howie is always ready with another innovative plan.
I have not read the first two stories in this trilogy, and I have not read a great deal of Norse mythology, but I could still follow the plot easily. The author has such a vivid imagination and has cleverly brought the island of Orkney to life. Each of the characters was colourful and three dimensional, especially Sam, a fearless and heroic boy whose actions seem a lot older than his teenage years. I also thought the author showed the strength and weaknesses of each of the main characters' personalities exceptionally well. I loved how they built strong relationships with each other and developed as the story progressed. Loki was a fantastic villain and not at all a clichéd bad guy.
The suspense and action in the story was well paced and kept you engaged. The obstacles that Sam and his friends encounter as they try to rescue Odin was not only nail-biting but emotional in parts. Although the story is based in a mythical land, I felt the strong message in the plot of forgiveness and relationships was easy to relate to. The ending was perfection. Highly recommended to lovers of action, adventure and mythology.
