Deep in the Ethiopian jungle in times of war, a reclusive order of Coptic monks guards the most sacred relic in all of Christendom - the Holy Grail. An epic cast of characters vies for the prize; some with an eye toward profit; some, protection; some, redemption. Central to The Quest are two journalists - one with sophistication; the other, bravado - and the beautiful, uninhibited photographer who loves them both. This sumptuous audio version of Nelson DeMille’s thrilling novel is a feast for both the ears and the imagination.
Nelson DeMille is the author of an even dozen New York Times best-selling novels, so it should come as no surprise that the narrative is gripping, eloquent, brilliantly descriptive and impeccably woven. The dual locales of Rome and Ethiopia are described in such vivid, mind-expanding detail that The Quest might well be considered a best seller purely as a travelogue: so rich is the description of the environs that the story itself seems almost a bonus. Voice actor Scott Brick, who has read six of DeMille’s best sellers prior to this bravura rendering, creates characters so consistent and varied that the listener completely forgets that a single voice is providing the dramatis personae. The vocal life of this audio book is, in a word, mesmerizing. The character of Frank Purcell (bravado journalist) is offered in a sublimely textured vocal portrait worthy of Humphrey Bogart or Orson Welles. It is hard to talk about an audio book as being a ‘page turner,’ but Nelson DeMille’s The Quest from Hachette audio read by Scott Brick really is exactly that. This first-rate recorded book enthralls from first word to the last.
