The Prophesy of Hermes: The Adventures of Hermes the Sailor Cat, Book 2 is a children's animal-adventure book written by Paul Watson and illustrated by Thomas Kimbrell. Hermes is a cat who lives on the S.S. Cyclops with his human companion, Stefan. Stefan had found Hermes when he was a small kitten and put him in his sea-bag to keep him warm. Hermes keeps the rats at bay aboard the ship, however, the rat population is getting a bit out of hand. When Stefan and Hermes visit Stefan's friend, Nadia, and her cat, Obelia, Stefan selects two young cats to help Hermes on the ship: Artemis, a slender and nimble cat, and Ajax, a burly and muscular young tom. Hermes is not just concerned about rats on the Cyclops, as he's begun to notice increasing numbers of well-organized rats on every Greek island the ship visits. Hermes reaches out to cats wherever they go and warns them of the imminent rat invasion.
Paul Watson's children's book, The Prophesy of Hermes, is entertaining and educational all at once. There are marvelous maps that allow the reader to follow the S.S. Cyclops on its voyages, and Thomas Kimbrell's pencil and pen and ink sketches help to bring the story to life. Kimbrell's cat pictures are fantastic and show the cats as they travel on and off the ship, and when they're battling the rat hordes. Watson's plot is well structured and the story is fast-paced. I enjoyed reading of the cats' visits to the various Greek islands, and the battle scenes are realistic and filled with action. While The Prophesy of Hermes is categorized as a children's book, I think animal lovers of all ages will enjoy reading it as much as I did. The Prophesy of Hermes: The Adventures of Hermes the Sailor Cat, Book 2 is highly recommended.
