The Prison Guard’s Son by Trace Conger is volume 3 of the Mr. Finn series. This is the final chapter. Thirty years earlier, a horrific crime was committed against a four-year-old boy. Abduction and murder, while the perpetrators themselves were just nine years old. After eight years in a juvenile detention facility, the boys are released and given new identities, but someone is still looking for them. The father of the little boy, Josh Baker, wants retribution. He wants the boys found and hires Finn Harding to find them. Finn takes the case and starts the long search, clashing with the man that Baker hired to mete out the justice the courts didn’t. Things aren’t always what they seem though, and Finn must make some tough decisions along the way.
The Prison Guard’s Son by Trace Conger was a gripping read. I didn’t read the first two books in the series, and I don’t know how much extra they would have given this story, but I don’t feel that I was missing too much when I read this book. That said, I would recommend reading the books in the order they were written to get a better feel for the main character. There was enough detail given to provide the necessary background, allowing me to follow the story and understand it. This was a deep story, with plenty to think about along the way, and it trotted along at a good pace, picking up speed towards the end. The character development was good, and matched the story well. This story reminded me very much of a true case from England and many comparisons can be drawn between this story and that case. Good book, good story, and very well-written; I would recommend this author to anyone who wants a meaty read to sink their teeth into.
