“Revenge only ever leads to dead-ends.” Perhaps, but it can be so very enticing under the right circumstances. As humanity prepares to fight back in Aaron Ryan's novel, Dissonance Volume II: Reckoning, the motivation for vengeance is not only present; it screams for satisfaction. Promoted to lieutenant, Cameron Shipley (call sign Jet) has returned to base after a mission that cost him the life of his brother Rut. Struggling to cope with his loss, Jet finds deliverance through Liam and Ally. Liam is a young soldier who becomes a surrogate brother, and Ally is Jet's love. With little time to grieve, Jet is briefed on plans to deploy secret weapons against the alien invaders that have turned humanity into a buffet and given a new mission to prepare a forward base. However, humans are not the only ones with secret weapons, and the Gorgons have a few surprises of their own.
Engaging beyond compare and a tightly woven tale, Dissonance Volume II by Aaron Ryan is the second book of an excellent science fiction trilogy. The plot now shifts to humanity preparing for a counterattack. Or does it? All I can say (without spoilers) is that a few surprises await in volume two. Themes of faith, family, and psychopaths clinging to power at all costs are prevalent, adding an extra layer of immersion to an already exceptional story. Familiar characters grow and develop realistically while new characters are introduced, and not all of them are what they appear to be. A grueling and enthralling pace with the occasional respite binds the novel together, making it a worthy sequel and a perfect reminder that deliverance from evil is a form of grace. Guaranteed to delight science fiction fans and anyone who likes apocalyptic tales, Dissonance is an absolute must-read.
