Alva Sachs is the founder of Three Wishes Publishing Company. She is a former elementary school teacher with sixteen years of classroom experience and a Master’s Degree in Education. Alva is an educator, consultant, speaker, and presenter. She has had the privilege of speaking and sharing her expertise at numerous venues, meetings, conferences, bookstores, schools, and libraries.
Alva writes stories to engage, excite, and empower young children at an early age for the shear joy of reading.
Alva serves as President on the Board of Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California, (RIFSoCal) to expand efforts to support literacy by helping to build home libraries in the greater Los Angeles/Orange County areas for underserved children while fostering literacy through the efforts of RIFSoCal’s motivational reading program. She also is part of the Angels of the Arts, in conjunction with the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. She helps to raise funds for Title 1 schools to provide free live theatre, music, and art educational experiences for children.

The Pirate Princess is a children’s adventure picture book written by Alva Sachs and illustrated by Patricia Krebs. Madison’s mom wondered why her daughter was sitting by her bedroom window and crying. Madison explained that she and her friends had made plans to go out and play that day, but it was raining, so everything was spoiled. Her mom quickly came up with a better idea -- she suggested that Madison invite her friends to come over and play inside. She would even make them a special lunch later on. Before she knew it, Madison had been on the phone with her friends, and they were on their way to her house. As the five of them excitedly sat in her room, the friends thought about what they wanted to do. Madison came up with the best plan of all -- why not play at being pirates? There were three laundry baskets out in the hall that worked together to make the perfect pirate ship, and before they knew it, Madison and her friends were sailing over the sea, looking for buried treasure.
Alva Sachs’s The Pirate Princess celebrates the power and magic of a child’s imagination as Madison and her friends escape the confines of a rainy day indoors and create the perfect fun-filled adventure as pirates in search of buried treasure. I loved feeling the magic as the kids got in their baskets and began their voyage on a pirate vessel. Patricia Krebs’s illustrations mesh beautifully with the story and were a source of continuing pleasure as I studied each of the detailed and lovely panels. I especially loved those panels showing the island the princess and her crew discover in all its lush and lovely greenery. To help young readers imagine their own pirate adventure, there’s a blank map waiting to be filled with a treasure map and another page waiting for a young reader to envision themselves as a pirate like Madison and her friends. The Pirate Princess shows kids the power of the imagination, and it does so in a book that can be enjoyed again and again. It’s most highly recommended.
