The Piggy Market is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Rachel Lockavitch McWaters. McWaters explores the ramifications of the popular children’s counting rhyme about piggies in this whimsical and clever book about piggies who go to market. Beginning with her considerations about which piggy gets the roast beef and which ends up with none, the narrator begins to wonder where a piggy market could be found. Would it be perched high atop a mountain or hidden deep within a sandy desert? Or maybe found underwater? Then our narrator meets an engaging and nattily attired piggy who offers to escort her to the most wonderful piggy market of them all. The narrator is astounded to find dozens and dozens of piggies, all out enjoying a day at the fair. Looking here and there, one can see piggies on Ferris wheels, chatting with friends and family, buying fruit from vendors, and enjoying the music, theatrical performances and other activities.
Rachel Lockavitch McWaters’s children’s picture book, The Piggy Market, kept me smiling as I revisited the old counting rhyme featuring piggies and appreciated how the author takes those lines of verse and creates something magical out of it. McWaters’s pen and ink illustrations are masterful and will provide endless coloring opportunities for young creative geniuses to enhance. Her verses flow naturally and smoothly, and never feel sing-song or unnatural. Where is that piggy fair, and how does one get there? The Piggy Market gives the reader plenty of ways to find out. This gentle and disarming tale is most highly recommended.
