"The Perfect Gentleman" by Imran Ahmad is the memoir of the author as he relates to the readers his journey. When he was a year old he was dressed in the perfect little suit. Looking every bit the grown-up gentleman, he entered into the Bonniest baby Contest. He didn’t win but came in second to the organizers' daughter, who just happened to be friends with the judge. This was how he began his life dealing with the injustice and corruption in the world today. Then his family left Pakistan and moved to London. That became his journey into a world, something that could become quite confusing for a young man. Raised in the strict Islamic Muslim religion, how would he go over in London or any other part of the world? Striving to be a perfect gentleman, he longed for things others have, a sports car and a beautiful woman. We read that with interest as we follow his life from childhood up to the time just before his marriage.
I really like to read memoirs to view the life of others as they live it. I found this to be a book with humorous parts and one with a complacent air about it. As we follow him on his journey from Pakistan to London, Scotland and to farther west, we tend to stop and reflect how it would have been for him to go into a different county with his religion and culture and to be treated like an outcast. One can either make a success out of one's life wherever one is or be a failure. Imran chose to be a success. I feel most people will enjoy this book if it is their type of genre.
