In The Path To Somerset by Janet Wertman, the second installment of the Seymour saga, we see through the eyes of Edward Seymour, Earl of Hartford, brother to the recently deceased Queen Jane. The story takes place three years after Jane’s death and her older brother is still in favor with the king as the heir was his nephew. The country is torn between two religions; Catholicism and Protestantism. While the king made known his break from Rome years before, his church is Catholic in all but name. Edward, along with a few he considered close, is concerned that the king could be swayed back to Rome as his moods rapidly change. Cromwell is away from court at a vital time when Norfolk and Gardiner are pushing the importance of returning worship to how it used to be.
We see Henry go from Anne of Cleves, who luckily kept her head and virtue, the young Katherine Howard, and now finally his last wife, the gentle and softly-spoken Katherine Parr.
Just like Jane The Quene, The Path To Somerset is a wonderful read. In this second story, we see through the eyes of the two religious factions that are pulling King Henry one way or the other to become a more Protestant nation or to revert back to Catholicism. Janet Wertman has once again impressed me with how easily she can help the reader get inside the main character's head. Edward Seymour is a fascinating character and the author makes him more realistic and human. She brings these historical people to life in a way in which we can understand and at times relate to them. I’m curious if there will be a third novel, as the two that I just finished have left me with a craving for more. Excellent story and very well written. Definitely sure to be a favorite among historical fiction fans.
