Judith Shakespeare has always been a fanciful child. Creating plays and stories from the time she was a child, she has always been able to capture the excitement of her family. But, as she grows older, the reality of life is not so kind to her. Life is not at all like she believed it to be in her stories. The virtue of a girl is all she truly possesses in Judith’s world and, when hers is taken, it destroys her in many ways. But a second chance in London seems the perfect opportunity for her. It isn’t until that future is almost taken as well that she realizes the true horror of being born a woman. As she meets the actors of Leicester’s Men, she is drawn into their world, but their world is not meant for her and she’s about to find that out with startling certainty in The Other Shakespeare.
Judith is a strong female character and one that any woman would love to read more about. The Other Shakespeare by Lea Rachel absolutely captivated me and I do not say that about many books. I loved how determined she was and how she grew as a person throughout the book. I also loved the new twist on the story of William Shakespeare. Cuthbert and the actors of the troupe had full personalities and were developed enough to draw a reader in as well. It was easy to feel for all the people who were introduced throughout the story. There were no two-dimensional characters here. And there was definitely an amazing plot.
