In The Order of the Avenging Star by Will Conway, one of humanity’s ancient enemies, the Apokros, entities that humans call demons and that infest “their nightmares like plagues,” gains greater strength with the fall of the Order of the Avenging Star that has protected humanity for ages. Hope is almost gone as Donato, Darselz, and Gavner find themselves without the strength and the affiliation of the order. They immediately discover that the world is a very hostile place, and while they find powerful threats from the harsh world, a new image of the order begins to surface. The order might have been something more than what they had imagined it to be. Now they must face new enemies while dealing with the ghosts that haunt them from the past.
Cleverly plotted and deftly written, The Order of the Avenging Star is a gorgeous treat for fans of epic fantasy. The writing is crisp and readers will enjoy the detailed descriptions, especially how the author describes the Apokros, allowing readers to imagine their nightmarish attributes and their unusual powers. I enjoyed the fact that the key players are poised against a powerful enemy, and what makes the plot interesting is that they do not enjoy the protection of an order that had backed them for years, so they are resourceful and have to work as a team to survive. There are many surprises in the plot. Will Conway’s gift for great prose and character comes across well in the writing. It was an enjoyable read.
