The Nine Assignments by Glenda Winders is a literary fiction novel that would appeal most to a mixed audience of adults and young adults interested in exploring relationships through a fictional lens. As children, half siblings Gina Chambers and Larry Langley were two peas in a pod, but adulthood has caused them to drift apart. Gina is now a farmer’s wife in Indiana and Larry is a musician in Hollywood, but the true estrangement occurs when Larry refuses to loan Gina the money to save her family’s farm. Their mother, Anita Langley, is unwilling to watch a once beautiful relationship crumble so she comes up with a plan to give them nine assignments to complete to bring them back together. Will the assignments be enough to repair the broken bond or will the once friendly siblings remain estranged?
The Nine Assignments by Glenda Winders is a beautiful book on the different types of relationships a person has with other people during their lives, and how the relationships can change over time. I really liked how the author explored a non-fictional concept in a fictional story. I quickly found myself bonding with Gina Chambers and understanding her on an emotional level. I found Anita Langley’s plan to bring the two siblings back together to be both inspirational and unique in its ingenuity. As a person who has a sibling, I have to say this book truly taught me the importance of trust, truth, communication, interacting, and caring. I finished this book with a desire to try to put more effort into my relationship with my sibling.
