The Murder in a Child's Mind by Rita Marcoli is a true story. Ann Lucas is a teenage girl with mental deficiencies who finds herself in the spotlight over the double murder of Wilma and Fred Burns. This is the story of how justice failed Ann, of how the justice system itself took no notice of the facts of the story. It could have been down to lazy police work, or a judge and jury who just didn’t care. The court reporter could see that there was something horribly wrong about the whole thing, but nobody else seemed to care. Anna gets involved with two boys, David and Lory, and a night of alcohol turns into a night of murder. The story follows her arrest and the court case that follows, ending in the verdict of the jury.
The Murder in a Child’s Mind by Rita Marcoli was a short read, but was researched well. The facts of the story are clear and there is no doubt that Ann was involved, but the whole story revolves around the way a young girl with mental deficiencies was treated, not just by the police but by her own counsel and the judge and jury. This is a well-written book, short and to the point, although I think a more detailed book would be better. This seems to be just a precis of events, but it does show that justice only seems to be served for those that can afford it. Or that the easy route is chosen! Fascinating story, but I would like to see more of it though.
