The Moon Shines Red by Pamela Sparkman is the first book in the fantasy/science fiction romance series Heart of Darkness. This is a book and series that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy cursed love stories filled with love, adventure, and suspense. The king of Kaelmor fell in love with a faerie princess and together the two broke the understanding that humans and faeries were not to be together. Their love left their child cursed by the decisions of his parents and left him with the heritage of being a mixed breed, accepted by neither humans nor faeries. Lord Lochlan grew up without any close ties or loved ones to bring him comfort as he must live with the curse upon him. However, his life is forever changed when Elin enters his life. When she is stolen away by enemies, Lord Lochlan sets out save her. Will he be able to save Elin, will his curse be broken, or will he be doomed to a life of despair and loneliness?
The Moon Shines Red by Pamela Sparkman was a well written book that seamlessly combined elements of both romance and fantasy. I loved how Pamela Sparkman created a unique world in this book, with interesting and complex characters who all had their own motives, as well as describing exquisite scenery. I loved how the author made me feel like I was experiencing this world alongside Lord Lochlan and Elin. While I really enjoyed Lord Lochlan as a character, Elin was my favorite. I found her ability to see people’s happiest memories intriguing as it was a power unique to this series. I also liked that she seemed more of an introvert for the fact that it made it easier to relate to her. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for the next one in the series!
