The Mixed Pickle by Trina Chako is a book made up of thirteen short stories. Each story is different; some are funny and some just make you think. The author is from India so I was not familiar with some of the terms she used to describe things. What drew me to this book was the name of the author. My mother’s name is also Trina and it is not very common. Some of the stories I really liked, others not so much. My favorite was The Mango Tree. It is about a girl named Subha who is called worthless by her whole family. Until one day Mali Kaka shows Subha she is not worthless and she can do something worthwhile. I believe this story had an excellent message and I would like to try that idea with my own daughter.

The Revelation and The Victory were also good, but a little too similar in that the characters both had something stolen from them. I also liked that Chako used the actual terms for things in her stories like “baraat” and “hoor”, but she did not explain what the words meant. I had an idea but I had to keep looking them up to be sure. I am always happy to learn what items are called in other languages. It is just a little easier on the reader when they do not have to guess what the meaning is.

Overall, The Mixed Pickle is a decent book. I enjoyed it. I believe that you can learn something from each story. What that something is, is all up to the reader.
