The Man Who Was A Santa Claus: The Story of Joe and Charlie by Walter Daniels is set against the backdrop of the Christmas season. Joe Tucker has been in a wheelchair after being hit by a car. He loves children and he believes he can make a huge difference in the lives of kids who need love and attention. He is on cloud nine when he gets his dream job; that of working with children during the Christmas season. He is supposed to be Santa Claus and help children feel the unconditional love which is associated with the spirit of Christmas.
Everyone needs to be loved and the book highlights the importance of giving unconditional love to all children who feel lost and left out in their world. Joe Tucker also realizes that one can touch the hearts of kids with the right words, despite having disabilities. Sitting in the mall as Santa, Joe meets Charlie, whose mother cannot afford to buy the gifts she wants for Christmas. The story is adorable and the author captures the essence and spirit of the season beautifully.
The book is an excellent bedtime storybook and can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries, especially during the Christmas season. The book also highlights the importance of unconditional love and care that will help a child to feel better. With reindeer, Santa Claus, and gifts woven into the plot, the story makes the Christmas season and spirit of Christmas tangible to all readers.
